Birdwatching

Birdwatching, or field ornithology, is a hobby that involves observing birds in their natural habitat. People who practice birdwatching gather information about bird species, their behavior, migrations, distribution, and other aspects of their life. Birdwatchers often equip themselves with special binoculars, telescopes, or cameras to better observe and photograph birds. Birdwatching is a popular hobby worldwide, and many countries have special ornithological groups, clubs, and organizations promoting this form of recreation.

Dwernik is a great base for birdwatching. It is a haven for the largest bird predators, including the golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, goshawk, sparrowhawk, and most species of owls living in Poland. It is also an opportunity to admire larks, tits, blackbirds, warblers, nuthatches, finches, magpies, swans, ducks, herons, grebes, woodpeckers, merlins, flycatchers, hazel grouses, storks, and many others.

Throughout the year, there are many local events that await you, including:

  • Dog Sledding Races – In the Land of the Wolf
  • The Post-War Horse Fair in Lutowiska is an open event organized annually on the first weekend of July. The event refers to the times when Lutowiska were located almost in the center of the Polish state. It was here that trade routes intersected, leading from Sanok to Transylvania and from Przemyśl through the Uzhok Pass to Uzhhorod. Such a convenient location meant that King August III granted Lutowiska the privilege of organizing ten fairs annually in 1742. The idea of the event is to continue the old traditions, popularize and promote the unique cultural heritage of the region, and enrich the local cultural offer. The Horse Fair in Lutowiska is an event that is extremely popular both among the local community and among visitors to the Bieszczady region in the summer season. It is one of the few opportunities for the residents of this region to experience various cultural events. The event is characterized by its open nature and an extremely rich repertoire of presented cultural attractions. It is one of the most important cultural events in the Bieszczady region, which perfectly integrates the community, provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase themselves, and serves to promote regional traditions. The event is strongly rooted in the cultural traditions of the Bieszczady region. In many elements, it refers to the culture of the Ruthenians (Hutsuls, Lemkos, and Boykos) who lived in this area for many centuries.
  • The Bieszczady Mountains have long been known for their forests, which are the greatest treasure of the region, providing jobs for the locals and attracting many tourists and nature lovers. With the forest workers, local community, and Bieszczady nature enthusiasts in mind, the Bison Day is organized in Lutowiska. The event’s origins can be traced back to the members of the Bieszczady Nature Enthusiasts Chapter, a group of 12 people (including Elżbieta Dzikowska, Wojomir Wojciechowski, Tadeusz Budziński, Kajetan Perzanowski, and Włodzimierz Podyma) who decided to promote, distinguish, and award the statuette to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the protection of the Bisons and the entire Bieszczady nature. Bison Day is a one-day cultural and educational event aimed at promoting Bieszczady nature and the achievements of foresters in its protection. It is an excellent opportunity to meet all forest workers (foresters, gamekeepers, loggers, scientists) and Bieszczady nature enthusiasts in one place and engage in a dialogue on any topic related to the forest and the natural world. Bison Day is a meeting of true nature enthusiasts, thanks to whom we can still enjoy staying in one of the most beautiful and fauna and flora-rich corners of Poland and Europe. The event program includes shooting competitions, logging competitions, hunting dog shows, exhibitions, lectures, and presentations. There are also numerous educational activities aimed at increasing our society’s knowledge of the unique Bieszczady nature and many additional cultural attractions providing good entertainment throughout the day.
